Local Area Information
Aberedw
Based in the heart of Powys, Aberedw is a small farming village of around 200 residents. We are very proud of our community owned pub 'The Seven Stars' which was bought by a number of villagers in 2019. The cosy country pub offers an excellent menu of food and drink to eat in and take away, booking for food is advised, but please pop down for a pint of Butty Bach or try out one of the many gins they have to offer with the locals!
Aberedw is surrounded by beautiful countryside, to take full advantage of this you are best advised to head up to one of the two hills accessible from the village where you can see for miles around. Llandeilo Hill to the south of the village and can be accessed via a fairly steep climb along a public footpath, along this route you can stop off at Llewelyns cave, the final hiding place of Prince Llewelyn from the English in 1282. When you reach the top of the hill there is miles of undulating common land to explore, with beautiful pools and views right over to the Brecon Beacons where Penyfan can be seen clearly. To the north of the village Aberedw Hill offers equally stunning views and more miles of countryside to explore, this can be accessed via a footpath through farmland. If you prefer a less hilly ascent, there are also walks along the River Edw, taking you to the stunning Gleision, perfect for picnics and paddling, or a short walk from the village church via the ruins of Aberedw castle. Guided walks are available with an additional cost.
The National Cycle Route 8 runs straight past the village, so ideal for cyclists wanting to explore the area.
Builth Wells
The market town of Builth Wells is a 10 minute drive from Aberedw. Home to an array of quaint small shops, cafe's, pubs, restaurants and the river side Groe Park, there is lots to offer holiday makers. Set right upon the beautiful river Wye, you have immediate access to the Wye Valley Walk, which runs all the way from Plynlimon in North Wales to Chepstow in the south. Builth Wells is also the home of The Royal Welsh Show Ground which hosts a number of prestigious events throughout the year such as the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show.
The breathtaking Elan Valley, the beautiful Brecon Beacons and the historic market town of Hay-on-Wye are all within a 30 minute drive from Aberedw, which makes the village ideal for those wanting to explore the beauty Powys has to offer.
